Golden Gate Bridge

Obwohl ich an diesem Tag gar nicht gut drauf war (üble Magenverstimmug) habe ich es mir doch nicht nehmen lassen, noch ein paar Wahrzeichen von San Francisco abzuklappern. Da wäre wohl insbesondere die Golden Gate Bridge zu würdigen.
Ist schon ein beeindruckendes Bauwerk!! Das sagt wikipedia dazu:

The Golden Gate Bridge is a suspension bridge spanning the Golden Gate, the opening into the San Francisco Bay from the Pacific Ocean. It connects the city of San Francisco on the northern tip of the San Francisco Peninsula and a portion of the south-facing Marin County headlands near the small bayside town of Sausalito, and is located at 37°49′12″N, 122°28′43″W.[1] The entire bridge (including the approach) spans 1.7 miles (2.7 km) long; the distance between the towers ("main span") is 4,200 feet (1,280 m), and the clearance below the bridge is 220 ft (67 m) at mean high water. The two towers rise 746 feet (227 m) above the water. The diameter of the main suspension cables is 1 yard (0.91 m).
The Golden Gate Bridge was the largest suspension bridge in the world when it was completed in 1937 and has become an internationally recognized symbol of San Francisco. It is currently the second longest in the United States after the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge in New York City.

Es ist echt wie auf einem Markplatz über diese Brücke zu laufen... hunderte von Leuten. Als Fußgänger und Fahrradfahrer ist es umsonst die Brücke zu überqueren. Als Autofahrer zahlt man 3$ (one way).

So, nun bin ich I'm zug von frisco zurueck nach palo alto. Der letzte zug faehrt ab um 12:01 uhr und kommt in palo alto um 1:05 an. Abfahrt in frisco ist bei 4th&kings str oder bei 22nd street&pennsylvania ave.

Zu empfehlen als bar ist "zeitgeist". Eine abgefahrene bar mit biergarten I'm herzen friscos an der mission street bzw. Valencia 199.

Auch witzig soll es immer I'm schwulenviertel um castro street sein.

Der "Half Dome" und die "Vernal Falls"

Die wohl größte Attraktion im Yosemite NP: Der weltbekannte Granit-Block "Half Dome", den man auch erklimmen kann (vielleicht dann bei meinem nächsten Trip mit Susi?).















Hier ein paar weitere Wasserfälle (oben: Vernal Fall). Dort bin ich dann auch noch hingewandert. Insgesamt war ich 14 Meilen (ca. 20km) und 8 Stunden unterwegs.

Beeindruckende Ausblicke ergaben sich auch auf dem "Panorama Trail", 8 Meilen vom Glacier Point zu den Vernal Falls und dann abwärts Richtung Tal auf dem Mist Trail... vorbei an Schluchten, Wasserfällen und Steilwänden.

Sehr interessant auch immer wieder die Wald-Landschaft. Vor ein paar Jahren gab es hier wohl einen ziemlich üblen Waldbrand - die ganzen schwarzen Stümpfe stehen immer noch und geben der Umgebung etwas verwunschenes...

Yosemite close-up

Mein Ausflug zum Yosemite NP in Kalifornien am 10. Juni 2006. Von Palo Alto aus 4 Stunden, wenn alles gut läuft. Ansonsten (wie bei mir) mit viel Verkehr am Freitag abend 5 1/2 Stunden.

Hier: Die Yosemite Falls, der größte Wasserfall in den USA (die Niagara-Fälle gehören zu Kanada).

Yosemite National Park (pronounced "Yo-SEM-it-tee", IPA [joʊˈsɛməti]) is a national park largely in Mariposa County, and Tuolumne County, California, United States. The park covers an area of 1,189 mi² (3,081 km²) and stretches across the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. Over 3 million people visit Yosemite each year, with most only seeing Yosemite Valley. Designated a World Heritage Site in 1984, Yosemite is internationally recognized for its spectacular granite cliffs, waterfalls, clear streams, Giant Sequoia groves, and biological diversity (about 89% of the park is designated wilderness area). It was also the first park set aside by the U.S. federal government and through the work of people like John Muir was a focal point in the development of the national park idea (although it was not the first designated a National Park.)

The geology of the Yosemite area is characterized by granitic rocks and remnants of older rock. About 10 million years ago, the Sierra Nevada was uplifted and then tilted to form its relatively gentle western slopes and the more dramatic eastern slopes. The uplift increased the steepness of stream and river beds, resulting in formation of deep, narrow canyons. About 1 million years ago, snow and ice accumulated, forming glaciers at the higher alpine meadows that moved down the river valleys. Ice thickness in Yosemite Valley may have reached 4,000 feet (1200 m) during the early glacial episode. The downslope movement of the ice masses cut and sculpted the U-shaped valley that attracts so many visitors to its scenic vistas today.

Visit of Downtown Detroit

Hier die Skyline von Detroit. Die Innenstadt ist nach wie vor noch sehr heruntergekommen. Zumindest kann man sich aber wieder dort aufhalten ohne Angst haben zu müssen, dass man erschossen wird.

Highlights in der Innenstadt sind die Stadien (American Footbal und Baseball) und die verschiedenen Hochhäuser. Das wohl schillernste ist das Renaissance Center, das Headquarter von GM (General Motors). Dann gibt es noch eine Greek Town und wohl noch ein paar andere spezielle Plätze die man sich ansehen kann.

Gegenüber von Detroit, nur getrennt durch einen Fluss, ist Windsor, das schon zu Kanada gehört.

Hier ein richtig amerikanisches BBQ Downtown Detroit. Wie man an den Fleischstücken sieht, sind es auch amerikanische Portionen! War aber echt cool: BBQ bei coolen HipHop Beats.

Visit of Eastern Market

Der Eastern Market findet einmal wöchentlich, immer Samstag, statt. Man bekommt dort so ziemlich alles was man sucht (Gemüse, Obst, Eier, Pflanzen, etc.) und der Markt ist ähnlich wie unsere Wochenmärkte. Er ist wirklich sehr europäisch.

Bekannt sind auch einige Geschäfte für deren Waren. In einem Laden bekommt man angeblich fast jede Käsesorte der Welt. In einem anderen bekommt man alle möglichen Nüsse in allen möglichen Variationen.


Der Eastern Market findet in einem recht alten Teil von Detroit statt, wo man auch mal ältere Gebäude sieht.
